Akedo Showten
Happy Details
Akedo Showten is a foodie-approved, family friendly restaurant in Langley. It's got a reputation for the best Creamy Ramen around. They're so used to having a lineup that they've gone so far as to put a basket of blankets outside to keep you warm while you wait! So nice!
We went for lunch and ordered edamame to start, then had the Ajitama with black broth, and the Veggie with black broth (white and red broth are also options but we could not say no to the garlic in the black broth). We are happy to confirm that it's absolutely delicious, the staff are friendly, the place is clean, and it's full of good vibes, but be prepared to rub shoulders with your neighbors because the place is tight!

So how do you make a small spot like this work for you and your kids? The good news is that they've done a lot to help families out. For instance, if you've got a lot of stuff, which parents often do, they'll bring you a basket for under your table to place it all in (so thoughtful!). Although they don't have a kids menu, the soups are very kid friendly. We suggest you order one and share it among your kids. They'll supply small bowls, and plastic utensils, and they'll even give you scissors to cut the noodles so it's easier (and more fun) to eat. If your kids have bigger appetites you can add extra noodles, meat, eggs, cheese, or veggies for a small charge to bulk it up! For kids who aren't into ramen, our server recommended their gyoza (which comes three ways-pan-fried, deep fried, or boiled), edamame, or rice. Fried Chicken is also an option the kids (parents too) might be interested in trying.
We suggest you don't go starving since there's a good chance you'll have to wait in a line up. Take a snack for your kids, and be prepared to play eye spy or some other game while you wait outside. You may also want to bring colouring, or a small toy for your kids since they don't offer anything like that. Once you're seated order right away (they have their menu online so you can make your decisions long before you sit down), and if you're in danger of having hangry kids then order an appy. This place is totally doable with school aged kids. Our older kids (Grade 1 &4) absolutely love this place, and can't believe that they get to cut their noodles with scissors.
So we've established that it's kid friendly, but is it baby and toddler friendly? Good question because it could certainly go wrong. Squishy tables, hot soup, and babies can be a recipe for disaster. Here's how we made it work, and what we suggest you do if you go with a little one.
Go when its slower. Avoid the busy times because there is only space for high chairs at the four-tops (which there are few of), and the two-top right by the door. We went when it was slower, but it was still packed, and we were seated in the only open table. It was a table for two, right in the middle of the row. There was no room for a high chair, though there was room for a booster and most likely an infant carseat, but neither worked for us, so we had our 18 month old in our lap. We thought about trying to make it work, but realized that wasn't a good idea.
We were relieved when a table that could handle a high chair opened up, and we were able to move. This was super lucky, and probably not an everyday occurrence as it gets so busy. Once we had the high chair everything was great (it's pretty key). We brought along a toy car, and ordered some edamame to snack on while we waited for the soup. He absolutely loved eating the noodles. We just shared from our bowls, cut the noodles with the scissors, and he went to town. He did make a bit of a mess, but we made sure to clean it up before we left. It was fantastic.
We absolutely recommend you venture out and give this place a try with your family. We're pretty sure you'll enjoy the food and appreciate the time and care they put into everything on the menu. We love that their Creamy Ramen is made fresh from chicken, veggies, and spices. There is no MSG, and they even offer the option of a veggie broth.
